The Greenville I-85/I-385 Gateway Project was a major infrastructure investment aimed at transforming one of the most congested interchanges in Upstate South Carolina. Led by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and constructed by Flatiron-Zachry, the $300 million project began in early 2017 and reached completion in mid-2020. Thomas Concrete supplied an estimated 30,000 cubic yards of concrete, supporting the construction of new bridges, ramps, and widened roadway sections designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term capacity at this critical junction.
The project significantly reshaped daily transportation for the more than 220,000 vehicles that use the interchange each day, with the modernized configuration built to handle up to 350,000 vehicles per day in the future. Improvements included widening I-385 to six lanes from Simpsonville to downtown Greenville, widening I-85 to Pelham Road, and constructing a dozen new bridges along with multiple new and reconfigured ramps. As the first of three high-priority interchanges identified by SCDOT for strategic investment statewide, the Gateway Project plays a vital role in supporting economic growth and strengthening the transportation network across the Upstate.
