Specialty concrete solutions from Thomas Concrete supported the construction of the Westside Reservoir Park tunnel, a project that expanded Atlanta's emergency water capacity and required advanced tunneling applications.

Thomas Concrete supplied approximately 39,000 cubic yards of concrete for the Westside Reservoir Park Tunnel, a critical infrastructure project developed by the City of Atlanta to expand the region’s emergency drinking water capacity. The project converted the former Bellwood Quarry into a 2.4-billion-gallon reservoir, increasing the city’s water reserve from three days to nearly 30 days. Construction took place between 2015 and 2020.

Concrete solutions were central to the tunnel construction, which was completed by Atkinson Construction/Technique Concrete Construction Joint Venture. A 12.5-foot tunnel boring machine, known locally as “Driller Mike,” excavated the five-mile tunnel connecting the reservoir to the water treatment system. Thomas Concrete supplied Thomafiber, a fiber-reinforced shotcrete used for tunnel stabilization, along with Thomagreen for tunnel lining applications, supporting long-term durability and performance in a demanding underground environment.
