Safety at 1072 West Peachtree

Thomas Concrete completed its largest-ever mass pour at 1072 West Peachtree in Atlanta - over 4,300 yards continuously with zero safety incidents. Through detailed planning, shift coordination, and close collaboration with project partners, the team delivered both high performance and high safety standards.

Safety in action: Our largest-ever mass pour

At 1072 West Peachtree in Midtown Atlanta, a new 60-story mixed-use tower is rising. When complete, it will feature more than 220,000 square feet of office space, 350 residential units, and a rooftop garden. But before that skyline-defining structure could take shape, it needed a strong – and safely placed – foundation.

Last year, Thomas Concrete delivered more than 4,300 cubic yards of concrete over the course of 30 continuous hours for the foundation mat. It was the largest single mass pour in company history, requiring meticulous planning, strategic shifts, and an unrelenting focus on safety from start to finish.

Behind the Pour

For the Atlanta-based safety team, the job began long before the first truck arrived onsite. Safety Managers Damion “DJ” Sumlin and Deshawn Glenn were part of a core group that met weekly with Turner Construction to plan every detail.

“We reviewed shift schedules, coordinated staging areas, and made sure everyone had what they needed to perform safely,” said Sumlin. “Putting in the time up front made the difference.”

Crews worked in rotating shifts. Drivers delivered the concrete on 10–12-hour rotations, with safety, operations, and sales personnel also rotating through to monitor conditions and support the team. CDPs received specific guidance around PPE, onsite hazards, and pour sequencing.

A test of endurance

Extended, overnight work introduces serious risks around fatigue and focus, but Thomas Concrete’s planning efforts helped keep energy and attention high. Glenn and Sumlin were both onsite throughout the pour, ensuring their presence was visible and their teams supported.

Thanks to this level of preparation, the project saw zero safety incidents over the 30-hour operation.

“This pour was a big win,” said Glenn. “Everyone performed at a high level and stayed safe, all the way through. That’s what we want on every job.”

Model for future work

The scale of this pour, combined with its seamless execution, demonstrated what’s possible when safety is embedded into every layer of the project, from weekly planning meetings to overnight shift coverage.

“Planning and communication will be taken into future work,” said Sumlin. “With the right people and preparation, Thomas Concrete can handle jobs of any size.”
