Supplying over 21,000 cubic yards of low-carbon concrete, Thomas Concrete supported one of Florence’s most demanding distribution center projects through technical innovation, precise logistics, and cross-market collaboration.

Supplying the Cheney Brothers Florence Distribution Center required precision, flexibility, and collaboration across multiple markets. Thomas Concrete delivered 21,350 cubic yards of Thomagreen® low-carbon concrete to support a large-scale, fast-paced project in a relatively small market. With multiple contractors on site – each requiring proprietary mix designs – logistics and batching accuracy were critical. The availability of two batch plants at our Florence location provided a unique advantage, allowing us to maintain consistency, meet tight schedules, and support simultaneous pours without disruption.

To meet the project’s demanding performance and temperature specifications, Thomas Concrete partnered closely with contractors to engineer practical solutions. A dedicated silo was allocated for Type K expansive cement used in cold storage flooring, and exterior paving was value-engineered by converting portions of traditional steel reinforcement to Fiber Force® 750 macro fiber at 5 lbs per cubic yard. Extreme summer and winter conditions were managed by supplying treated water using both a boiler and chiller, ensuring strict placement requirements were met, including a maximum concrete temperature of 85°F during peak summer pours. Support from three additional Thomas Concrete markets helped ensure uninterrupted supply, making this project a strong example of coordination, technical expertise, and low-carbon concrete solutions in action.
