Charlotte Airport Tower

PROJECT FACTS

Type:Infrastructure
Location:Charlotte, NC
Developer:Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Contractor:Archer Western
Period:2017-2018
The second tallest air traffic control tower in the U.S. provides expansive views of the airfield. Building a tower 370 feet high places extreme demands on cooperation and precision. Every link in the chain must hold, just like the interaction between air traffic controllers and pilots during every takeoff and landing.

Thomas Concrete supplied ready-mix concrete for the construction of the newest air traffic control tower at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, a critical infrastructure project completed between 2017 and 2018. Working alongside Archer Western as the general contractor, concrete was delivered from our Charlotte and Carowinds plants, totaling approximately 1,950 cubic yards over the course of the project.

Standing 370 feet tall, the $60 million precast and steel superstructure is one of the largest air traffic control towers in the United States. The tower features an 850-square-foot cab that provides air traffic controllers with a clear, elevated view of the airfield. At its base, a 42,000-square-foot facility houses the expanded Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON), supporting aircraft arrivals and departures throughout the Charlotte airspace. The new tower replaces the previous structure that had been in service since 1979, enhancing both operational efficiency and safety at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
