Concrete is a complex product. It requires a lot of experience, extensive knowledge, and even finesse to develop concrete for the unique buildings and structures we see around us. We at Thomas Concrete Group have extensive experience in developing the optimal concrete for many different projects with widely varying requirements. Together with our customers, we contribute to building a sustainable society.

The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design, situated on Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus, is a 4,366 square meter education and research center completed in autumn 2019. This state-of-the-art facility includes classrooms, labs, a conference room, an auditorium, office spaces, a rooftop honeybee apiary, and a blueberry orchard. As the 28th building to achieve full Living Building Challenge certification, it is designed to be the most environmentally advanced education and research building in the Southeast. The Kendeda Building is 80% more efficient than a comparable new, conventionally built higher education building in Atlanta. It operates as a net-positive energy facility, generating more electricity through onsite solar panels than it consumes each year.

Thomas Concrete contributed approximately 1,600 cubic yards of concrete to this pioneering project, meeting the unique requirements of the structure. An aggressive casting schedule was maintained using a 5000-psi high-early mix design. To manage stormwater runoff in an urban environment, 130 yards of pervious concrete were utilized. The concrete mixtures were designed to meet recycled content standards, incorporating Slag and Fly Ash to replace 50% of the cement, and using recycled water and sequestered CO2. These sustainable practices highlight Thomas Concrete’s commitment to innovative and environmentally friendly construction solutions, for which we earned the Swarm Changemakers Award.
